Where?
Texas Speed Club practices at Playland Skate Center, 8822 McCann, Austin, TX. Playland is located in North Austin near the intersection of 183 (Research Blvd) and MoPac, just behind the Nissan dealership.
When?
Newcomer practice is Friday, 6 to 7, after the afternoon public session.
Who?
Anyone who enjoys inline or roller skating. All ages are welcome! Our skaters range in age from 3 to 63.
Cost?
You have to pay Playland ($7.00) for the individual practice sessions. A good option is to purchase a monthly pass from Playland ($50.00) that covers the cost of any and all public skate sessions and practice sessions.
Getting Started.
To practice with the Texas Speed Club, you are required to have a helmet and skates. You are also encouraged to wear any or all of your safety gear--helmet, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads. We train primarily to compete in inline speed skates, but whatever flavor of skates you own can get you started with us. (Coach Sonny has been a quad skater for over 40 years. He tried to convert to inlines and for a little while he was even a "quad liner"--one quad skate, one inline skate.)
For your own safety (and ours!) you should be comfortable on your skates. We do not give skating lessons. You should be able to skate “in control” before you come to practice with the Speed Club. Make sure that you have learned the basic elements of skating so that you know how to operate your skates properly and safely. Since speed skating is a pack sport, not falling is a good skill to acquire for the sake of every one behind you! Yes we know. Falling is inevitable! Just keep practicing. Whether you practice during the public skating sessions or in your favorite parking lot, the keywords here are always practice, practice, practice.
